Stump grinding in Tuscaloosa, AL

An old stump trips people, chews up mower blades and sends up sprouts. Here's how grinding works and what to ask before the grinder shows up.

A stump grinder uses a spinning wheel with carbide teeth to chew the stump into chips, down below the soil surface. When it's done you can fill the hole with topsoil and lay sod or seed, plant something nearby, or put in a path or patio. It's much faster and tidier than digging out the whole root ball, and it doesn't leave a crater the size of a truck tire.

What should I ask before grinding?

  • How deep? Grass needs less depth than a new flower bed or a footing, so say what you plan to do with the spot.
  • What about the chips? Some companies leave them as backfill or mulch, some haul them away, and some charge for it separately.
  • Surface roots? Roots running across the lawn may be ground as a separate item.
  • Utility locates? Ask whether the company will put in an Alabama 811 request before it starts.

Why does Alabama 811 matter for a stump?

Gas, water, cable and electric lines often run right past old trees, and a grinder wheel doesn't care what it hits. Alabama 811 asks for two full working days of notice before digging, not counting the day of the request, and says every dig needs a call or click. Marks stay valid for 20 working days. The Alabama Public Service Commission adds that line depth can change over time from erosion and earlier digging, so even a shallow grind near a marked line deserves care.

Slopes, sand and access

Grinders run from compact machines that fit through a backyard gate to large units for big stumps. On a steep lot near the lake or in the hills north of the river, the crew has to think about where a machine can safely sit. On sandy ground in the flatter parts of the county, a heavy grinder can rut a wet lawn. Tell the company about gates, steps, slopes and retaining walls when you call.

Is the stump part of tree removal?

Not always. When you get a tree removal quote, ask whether grinding is included or priced as a separate line.

The tree company sets the price after it sees the tree, what's under it and how a bucket truck, crane or grinder can get to it. We don't quote prices, and a number given over the phone before anyone has looked at the tree is a rough starting point at best.

Common questions

Will a ground stump sprout again?

Some species can sprout from roots left behind. Grinding deeper and cutting new sprouts as they appear usually takes care of it.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

It's usually better to plant a few feet away from the chip-filled hole. If you plan to replant, ask how deep the company will grind.
